Paddleboarding is my new favorite summer activity. Being out in the middle of the river on a hot summer day is the perfect way to relax and cool off.
Before I started paddleboarding I had no idea what to wear and honestly, Google was just filled with companies trying to sell me something. After paddleboarding for most of the summer, here’s what I have found to be the best things to wear for paddleboarding.
Read on for what to wear and pack for stand up paddleboarding! (Note: this post covers gear for summer paddleboarding – since that’s what we have access to in Western Pennsylvania. If looking for cold weather paddling gear, check out this guide!)
As always, follow the principles of leave no trace when you're out exploring! Pack out all trash, leave wildlife alone, and generally leave it better than you found it - for more information visit the Leave No Trace Center.
What to Wear Stand Up Paddleboarding
Sunglasses
While it’s often not sunny in Western Pennsylvania where I live, it’s easy to forget sunglasses at home! I love my Goodrs because they have the UV protection I need without breaking the bank. As someone who has dropped more than a pair of sunglasses in the river, the price point is a real selling point for me.
Hat
Did I mention that it’s extra sunny when you’re on the water? I recommend wearing a hat for some additional protection from the sun. This cute hat from Left on Friday covers both your face and your neck and has a neck strap so you don’t drop it in the water!
Bathing Suit
I usually wear a bikini when paddleboarding because it is the most comfortable. It’s also meant to get wet!
Water Clothes
If you’re not into the bikini life, I have been loving water resistant clothing for paddleboarding. Sometimes I just want to wear more clothing (or have pockets!)
These shorts from Stio are perfect for boarding. These shorts dried so quickly that I didn’t even need to change to drive home in them. I also love their sun shirts if I am looking for a little more protection than sunscreen can offer (Note: these products was gifted but opinions are my own!)
Life Jacket
While it’s not the most fashionable accessory, it’s important to stay safe. If you’re renting a SUP, the outfitter should provide a life jacket. If you have your own board, make sure to get one. I enjoy these low profile ones so that I feel that I am not losing paddling range of motion. Make sure that whatever life jacket you get is approved by the US Coast Guard.

What to Bring Stand Up Paddleboarding
Sunscreen
Water reflects UV more than just being on land so make sure to pack sunscreen and reapply if needed. I love Sun Bum sunscreen. It goes on easily without being sticky and it smells great! I have body, face, and lip sunscreen from them.
Water
It gets hot out there! I recommend bringing a water bottle out on the lake with you. The last two times I went SUPing I forgot a water bottle and I regretted it hard. I love my Hydro flask as it keeps water cold even in hot temps! You can also get a carabiner to clip the bottle to your board.
Snacks
Never forget snacks for any outdoor activities. NEVER.
Dry Bag
A dry bag with a clip is a must for heading out for long paddles.Gotta keep your snacks and sunscreen dry! Having a clip to attach to the board ensures that your bag won’t go floating off into the middle of the lake. I love this one from Sea to Summit.
Waterproof Phone Case
I love photos and videos of my adventures but I would be devastated if anything happened to my phone. The ideal waterproof case is one that floats (just in case) but I have one that has a long cord to attach around my neck or around my wrist. Check out this waterproof phone case from REI to keep your memories dry!
Towel
Even if you don’t jump in for a dip, you’re probably going to get wet when stand up paddleboarding. I love an easy to pack towel, such as this one from PackTowl or any of the adorable design from Dryfox Co.
Sandals
I usually go barefoot on the board, but like to have slip on/slip off shoes for walk to the rental area. I highly recommend Tevas if you’re going to wear them out on the water. Waterproof Birkenstocks are also a great option if you’re going barefoot on the board.
Change of Clothes
It is no fun to sit in your wet bathing suit or clothes on the way home from an adventure. I enjoy changing into a comfy top and shorts before driving home (via my normal adventure stop at Sheetz).
