I love visiting national parks and monuments but the entrance fees can really add up! I am spoiled by all the free PA state parks that we have so anytime I need to pay a fee, I am always surprised.
Enter the America the Beautiful pass.
This annual pass allows pass holders to get into any federal recreation site, including national parks, monuments, and other sites for NO fee. The pass is a great investment if you’re planning to visit multiple sites in a year.
Below is a guide to all of the places in the Mid- Atlantic region where the America the Beautiful pass will save you money, plus some FAQs on whether the pass is worth it, where to buy the pass and more! (For the purposes of this guide, the Mid-Atlantic region is defined as Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia. Delaware would be included, but it doesn’t have any parks!)
As always, follow the principles of leave no trace when you're out exploring! Pack out all trash, leave wildlife alone, and generally leave it better than you found it - for more information visit the Leave No Trace Center.
About the America the Beautiful Pass
Where to Buy
Before you can use an America the Beautiful pass, you have to purchase it!
The pass can be purchased at all parks that take the pass, as well as online as long as you purchase soon enough in advance to get the pass before your trip (NPS recommends leaving at least two weeks to receive). Check out this list of locations from the NPS to see where you can purchase your pass – https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/pickup-pass-locations.htm
REI also sells the pass, so if you’re already making a purchase for an outdoor adventure, just add it to your cart.
America the Beautiful Pass – Worth it for the Mid-Atlantic region?
Whether the pass is worth it really depends on your plans for the year. The annual pass is $80 as of 2025. While it’s not as necessary as a having it out West, I think there is still value to having the pass in the Mid-Atlantic region.
If you’re planning to visit four sites once in a year, it’s worth it. If you’re planning to visit only one site multiple times in a year, it may not be worth it, as some of the sites have a site-specific annual pass that could cost less. For example, Shenandoah has a $55 annual pass that is just for that park. I think it’s worth it to buy the full pass because you never know where adventure will take you!
